Barb Hoffmann started Tropical Designs (formerly Hoffmann's Green Industries) almost 40 years ago as a wholesale greenhouse operation out of her basement. It soon grew into a true family business! Barb focused on building a team and growing the company, while her husband John was in charge of operations and greenhouse maintenance. Barb's father, Art, was the salesperson on the streets, and her mother, Mary Ruth, handled the accounting and relations with the growers in Florida. Mary Ruth, a legend in the business, worked until she was 94. Even their daughters were involved: Shannon worked picking weeds under the racks of plants while Shayne enjoyed being amongst the greenery.

In the early 80s, Barb partnered with an innovative landscape architect who asked her to design an interior setting with plants. Interiorscaping was a new concept for many businesses and Barb was quick to educate them on why they needed the services of Tropical Designs. In the late 80s, they sold off the wholesale division and over the next 20 years Tropical Designs would grow to be one of the region's leading interiorscaping firms.
